How Do I Upload My Files?

Adobe Dreamweaver

(CS3, Mac OSX; other versions may vary slightly)

For an existing Dreamweaver website:

  • Open your existing web site project
  • Click Site>Manage Sites...
  • Click New...FTP & RDS Server
  • Enter your site name in the 'Name:' field
  • Make sure the 'Access type:' is set to FTP
  • In the 'FTP host:' field, enter the account information provided to you in your email
  • In the 'Host directory:' field, enter 'pages/' (without the quotes)

Example: sitename.cust.magicedit.com (where 'sitename' is your MagicEdit user name*)
Login: sitename | Password: ********
Click Test to make sure Dreamweaver can connect to the server. After it has connected, click OK.
In the Files workspace, click the down arrow (download) to pull down your files and work on them. When you have finished, push the files back up to the server by clicking the up arrow.



For a new site:

  • Click Site>New site...
  • Click the Advanced tab
  • Click 'Remote Info' under Category
  • Make sure the 'Access type:' is set to FTP
  • In the 'FTP host:' field, enter the account information provided to you in your email
  • In the 'Host directory:' field, enter 'pages/' (without the quotes)

Example: sitename.cust.magicedit.com (where 'sitename' is your MagicEdit user name*)
Login: sitename | Password: ********
Click Test to make sure Dreamweaver can connect to the server. After it has connected, click OK.
When you have finished editing your files, push the files up to the server by clicking the up arrow (upload).



Windows

  • Click Start>My Computer
  • In the Address bar, type ftp://sitename.cust.magicedit.com (where 'sitename' is your MagicEdit user name*)
  • Enter your user name (sitename) and password and click “Log On”
  • Put your files in the 'pages' folder (without the quotes)


Mac/Linux Terminal

  • Open the Terminal application
  • Type the following at the command line:
  • ftp sitename.cust.magicedit.com (where 'sitename' is your MagicEdit user name*)
  • Name: sitename
  • Password: ********
  • When adding files to the site, put them in the 'pages' folder (without the quotes)

Example: 'put Documents/website/index.html pages/index.html' (without quotes), where Documents/website/ is the path on your computer to the file folder and 'pages/' is the path to the website file folder on the FTP server. To download files, use 'get [Source path] [Destination path]'. For a complete list of ftp commands, type ? at the ftp> prompt.


*NOTE: ‘sitename’ is an example for both your site name and user name. Your site name/user name is generally the first 8 letters/numbers of your domain name. You can find this information, along with your password, in the email you received from support@magicedit.com.
